Pit Traps for Blizzards
Drifting around small-scale models showed us how to build a better blizzard
trap. First we learned that its real important where you build the berm of
material dug from the pit. Snowman made model berms from concrete, and we
compared the snow in a pit when the berm was upwind (bottom left photo) and
downwind (bottom right photo).
No contest--definitely more snow in the pit when we put the berm downwind
(Jairell and Tabler 1985). A berm
upwind of a pond works like a wind shelter,
diverting blowing snow around the pit. (Arrows from lower left indicate
direction of drift snow)
