Wyoming Monthly Climatology
October 2005

Statewide Summary

Graphs show that during the month of October, temperatures most of the state averaged above normal. Precipitation was above normal over most of the state. By early November, modeled soil moisture showed close to normal soil moisture levels over most of Wyoming. Stream flows were near normal except over portions of the North Central and East Central Wyoming. The start of November's Drought Monitor map shows conditions varying from no drought to moderate drought over Wyoming. Mostly some improvement occurred across the state in 2005.

As of October 23, 57 percent of the State had adequate topsoil moisture and 2 percent was surplus, virtually unchanged from the previous week. Subsoil moisture was rated adequate in 41 percent of the state and surplus in 1 percent. Supplies were close to last year but continued to be significantly better than the 5-year average. Range and pasture condition was rated good or excellent in 47 percent of the state, down 7 points from last week but well ahead of last year's 17 percent and the 5-year average of 12 percent. Stock water supplies were rated adequate in 61 percent of the state.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, October 7th, temperatures ranged from 4.6 degrees below normal in Cody and Greybull to 5.0 degrees above normal in Laramie. The high temperature was 91 in Torrington and the low was 18 in Big Piney. All areas reported some precipitation and most amounts were above normal. Storms during the week and the weekend brought widespread precipitation and much cooler temperatures with freezing temperatures everywhere. The most precipitation was reported in Sundance with 1.85 inches followed by Newcastle with 1.42 inches and Kaycee with 1.29 inches.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, October 14th, temperatures ranged from 3.0 degrees below normal in Deaver to 2.6 degrees above normal in Redbird. The high temperature was 82 in Wheatland and Chugwater and the low was 18 in Jackson. A storm during the week and previous weekend brought snow to the Southeast. The most precipitation was reported in Chugwater with 2.00 inches followed by Wheatland with 1.56 inches and Torrington with 1.02 inches.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, October 21st, temperatures were above normal and ranged from 3.4 degrees above normal in Jackson to 12.0 degrees above normal in Riverton. The high temperature was 81 in Wheatland and the low was 19 in Big Piney. Precipitation was mostly below normal. The most precipitation was reported in Saratoga with 0.25 inches followed by Laramie with 0.24 inches and Rawlins with 0.18 inches.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, October 28th, temperatures averaged above normal almost everywhere and ranged from 0.1 degree below normal in Wheatland to 9.9 degrees above normal in Big Piney. The high temperature was 77 in Sundance and the low was 14 in Redbird. Precipitation was below normal except in Jackson and Rock Springs and was zero in most areas. The most precipitation was reported in Jackson with 0.48 inches followed by Rock Springs with 0.27 inches, Evanston with 0.17 inches, and Big Piney with 0.08 inches.
