March 2005

Statewide Summary

Graphs show that during the month of March, temperatures ranged from above normal in most of Wyoming except for the extreme western and southcentral regions. Precipitation was general well below normal over much of the state except for some spotty areas in east and west central Wyoming. Since the Water Year began on 1 October 2004, only the SW region of the state has experience well above normal precipitation. Soil moisture showed little change in March, with driest conditions persisting over northeastern Wyoming with above normal levels over south central regions. Mountain snowpack was well below normal over northern Wyoming while elsewhere, conditions were near to slightly above normal. At the end of March, average snowpack was 82%, up about 5% from March, 2004. Streamflow was somewhat below normal over nearly half the state.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in March was 36.1°F. This is 1.9°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 67°F on the 28th and the minimum of 10°F occurred on the 14th. Precipitation total of 0.88 inch is 84% of normal. Much of the month's precipitation fell on the 21st (0.54 inch). Snowfall totaled 8.3 inches which is 86% of the long term average.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in March was 30.3°F. This is 0.3°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 58°F on the 28th and the minimum of -2°F occurred on the 14th. Precipitation total of 0.49 inch is 62% of normal. Snowfall totaled 7.6 inches which is 92% of the long term average.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in March was 33.3°F. This is 0.5°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 56°F on the 9th and the minimum for the month was 4°F occurring on the 14th. Precipitation total of 0.40 inch is 62% of normal. Snowfall totaled 3.9 inches which is 50% of the long term average.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in March was 32.6°F. This is 1.0°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 53°F on the 9th and the minimum for the month was 16°F occurring on the 25th. Precipitation total of 0.43 inch is 55% of normal. Snowfall totaled 6.2 inches which is 91% of the long term average.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in March was 29.6°F. This is 0.9°F cooler than normal for the month (same as last month). The maximum temperature for the month was 47°F on the 11th and 27th and the minimum for the month was 13°F occurring on the 14th. Precipitation total of 0.66 inch is 74% of normal. Snowfall totaled 11.0 inches which is 120% of the long term average.

    Big Piney

    The average temperature in March was 25.0°F. This is 1.0°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 47°F on the 9th and the minimum for the month was -6°F occurring on the 2nd. Precipitation total of 0.91 inch is 157% of normal. Snowfall totaled 11.4 inches which is 265% of the long term average.

    Lander

    The average temperature in March was 37.1°F. This is 1.6°F warmer than normal for the month and represents the 25th warmest March on record. The maximum temperature for the month was 68°F on the 9th and 11th and the minimum for the month was 12°F occurring on the 13th and 15th. Precipitation total of 0.94 inch is 76% of normal and this represents the 54th driest March on record. Snowfall totaled 15.1 inch which is 87% of the long term average and this represents the 68th least snowiest March on record.

    Riverton

    The average temperature in March was 37.2°F. This is 2.3°F warmer than normal. A record high of 64°F was set on the 7th. The maximum temperature for the month was 68°F on the 9th and the minimum for the month of 12°F occurred on the 15th. Precipitation total of 0.23 inch is 48% of normal. Snowfall totaled 6.2 inch which is 115% of the long term average.

    Worland

    The average temperature in March was 37.7°F. This is 0.6°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 69°F on the 28th and the minimum for the month of 12°F occurred on the 3rd. Precipitation total of 0.37 inch is 95% of normal. Snowfall totaled 5.1 inches which is 113% of the long term average.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in March was 39.0°F. This is 3.7°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 72°F on the 11th and the minimum for the month of 13°F occurred on the 18th. Precipitation total of 0.46 inch is 46% of normal. Snowfall totaled 2.3 inches which is 19% of the long term average.

    Casper

    The average temperature in March was 36.0°F. This is 1.0°F warmer than normal and represents the 43rd warmest March on record. The maximum temperature for the month was 67°F on the 9th and 11th and the minimum for the month of 9°F occurred on the 13th. Precipitation total of 0.83 inch is 92% of normal. Snowfall totaled 10.0 inch which is 78% of the long term average.

    Douglas

    The average temperature in March was 36.4°F. This is 0.5°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 68°F on the 28th and the minimum for the month of 11°F occurred on the 15th. Precipitation total of 0.49 inch is 63% of normal.

    Torrington

    The average temperature in March was 39.6°F. This is 1.9°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 74°F on the 28th and the minimum for the month of 14°F occurred on the 1st, 15th and 16th. Precipitation total of 0.19 inch is 27% of normal. Snowfall totaled 4.2 inches which is 71% of the long term average.
