Wyoming Monthly Climatology
June 2005

Statewide Summary

Graphs show that during the month of June, temperatures ranged below normal over most of Wyoming except for above normal readings over the northeast corner of the state. Precipitation was general above normal over the border regions of the state but much below normal over the interior of Wyoming. Modeled soil moisture showed a slow drying trend over some regions of the Wyoming Rockies. Range and pasture conditions improved 10% during June at 74 percent good or excellent rating. Last year on this date (1 July), only 13 percent was rated good and the 5-year average was 24 percent. The end of June streamflow (7-day average) was near or above normal for most stations with the exception of below normal readings over northeastern Wyoming. Overall, the drought monitor map shows slight improvement over last month over central and northeastern Wyoming.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, June 3rd, temperatures were below normal across State. Temperatures ranged from 1.2°F below normal in Jackson to 8.9°F below normal in Newcastle. The high temperature was 79°F in Archer and Torrington and the low was 28°F in Afton. Late week storms brought widespread precipitation especially in southern areas of the State. Chugwater had the most precipitation with 1.70 inches followed by Afton with 1.62 inches, Archer with 1.58 inches, and Wheatland with 1.57 inches. Additional rain and snow fell late Friday into Saturday particularly in the Southeast.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, June 10th, temperatures were below normal across State. Temperatures ranged from 2.1°F below normal in Chugwater to 9.4°F below normal in Evanston. Uinta County is behind on planting oats and barley because of rain and cold temperatures. Heavy frost impacted alfalfa in Sweetwater County. The high temperatures of the week were 89°F in Newcastle and Torrington and the low was 23°F in Big Piney. Widespread storms brought more precipitation, especially in the Southeast. Archer had the most precipitation with 3.49 inches followed by Chugwater with 2.36 inches, Cheyenne with 2.33 inches, and Laramie with 2.28 inches.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, June 17th, temperatures were below normal across State. Temperatures ranged from 0.7°F below normal in Sheridan to 7.1°F below normal in Chugwater. The high temperature of the week was 93°F in Greybull and the low was 28°F in both Big Piney and Jackson. Warmer, dry weather helped fieldwork and crop growth. Redbird had the most precipitation with 2.64 inches followed by Torrington with 2.50 inches, Archer with 1.67 inches, and Cheyenne with 1.49 inches.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, June 24th, temperatures were above normal across State. Temperatures ranged from 0.6°F above normal in Jackson to 9.4°F above normal in Sheridan. The high temperature was 99°F in Worland and the low was 29°F in Jackson. Dry weather continued. Fire danger increased in some areas. Sundance had the most precipitation with 0.52 inches followed by Worland with 0.38 inches, and Rawlins with 0.35 inches.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, July 1st, temperatures ranged from 3.0 degrees below normal in Worland to 3.0 degrees above normal in Jackson. The high temperature was 94 in Torrington and the low was 34 in Big Piney. Sheridan had the most precipitation with 1.47 inches followed by Redbird with 0.56 inch and Wheatland with 0.55 inch.

On June 21, 2005, a severe thunderstorm moved into Yellowstone National Park producing rain, hail, gusty winds, and lightning activity. During the course of this storm, a lightning bolt struck near the Old Faithful Geyser, causing several injuries, one critical.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in June was 61.7°F. This is 0.2°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 88°F on the 22nd and the minimum of 39°F occurred on the 11th and 14th. Precipitation total of 4.85 inches is 229% of normal and represents the 2nd wettest June since 1873. The wettest day in the was on the 3rd to 4th (2.28 inches fell). Monthly snowfall totaled T. For the season that started 1 July 2004, 62.1 inches fell. This is 1.8 inches above normal.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in June was 55.5°F. This is 1.6°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 85°F on the 21st and the minimum of 31°F occurred on the 11th. Another record high of 79°F occurred on the 22nd. Precipitation total of 3.29 inches is 247% of normal and represents the 3rd wettest June since 1948. The wettest day in the was on the 3rd to 4th (2.27 inches fell). During the morning of the 4th, between 2 inches to 12 inches fell across Laramie from north to south. I-80 was closed most of the morning due to poor visibility and heavy snow. This was one of the latest heaviest snows to occur in the Laramie Valley.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in June was 57.9°F. This is 3.4°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 91°F on the 21st and the minimum for the month was 30°F occurring on the 2nd. Precipitation total of 0.78 inch is 84% of normal. The wettest day in the was on the 22nd (0.30 inch fell).

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in June was 57.8°F. This is 1.8°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 89°F on the 21st and the minimum for the month was 30°F occurring on the 8th. Precipitation total of 0.70 inch is 108% ofnormal. The wettest day in the was on the 28th (0.26 inch fell).

    Evanston

    The average temperature in June was 54.0°F. This is 1.9°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 84°F on the 21st and the minimum for the month was 28°F occurring on the 8th. Precipitation total of 1.60 inches is 167% of normal. The wettest day in the was on the 12th (0.39 inch fell).

    Big Piney

    The average temperature in June was 51.9°F. This is 3.1°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 87°F on the 21st and the minimum for the month was 23°F occurring on the 8th. Precipitation total of 0.94 inch is 131% of normal. The wettest day in the was on the 12th (0.50 inch fell).

    Lander

    The average temperature in June was 61.5°F. This is 2.2°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 94°F on the 21st (tied for record high for the day) and the minimum for the month was 33°F occurring on the 2nd. Precipitation total of 0.31 inch is 27% of normal. Snowfall since 1 July 04 is 87.3 inches which is 15.6 inches above average.

    Riverton

    The average temperature in June was 62.9°F. This is 0.8°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 95°F on the 21st and the minimum for the month of 35°F occurred on the 2nd. Precipitation total of 0.29 inch is 25% of normal. A record trace of snow fell on the 7th and for the season (since 1 July 04) 37.5 inches has occurred which is 6.4 inches above average.

    Worland

    The average temperature in June was 63.6°F. This is 3.8°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 99°F on the 21st and the minimum for the month of 38°F occurred on the 10th. Precipitation total of 0.72 inch is 65% of normal. The wettest day in the was on the 24th (0.38 inch fell).

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in June was 66.8°F. This is 5.2°F Warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 94°F on the 21st and the minimum for the month of 35°F occurred on the 10th. Precipitation total of 2.00 inches is 99% of normal. The wettest day in the was on the 26th (0.78 inch fell).

    Casper

    The average temperature in June was 61.8°F. This is 0.9°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 95°F on the 20th, 21st and 22nd and the minimum for the month of 33°F occurred on the 11th (record for the day). Precipitation total of 0.41 inch is 29% of normal. Since 1 July 04, a total of 59.3 inches of snow has been recorded which is 26.6 inches below the seasonal average.

    Douglas

    The average temperature in June was 63.2°F. This is 0.3°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 96°F on the 21st and 22nd and the minimum for the month of 36°F occurred on the 11th. Precipitation total of 0.87 inch is 61% of normal. The wettest day in the was on the 12th-13th (0.59 inch fell).

    Torrington

    The average temperature in June was 66.1°F. This is 0.2°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 96°F on the 22nd and the minimum for the month of 41°F occurred on the 14th. Precipitation total of 4.69 inches is 224% of normal and represents the 2nd wettest June since 1922. The wettest day in the was on the 12th-13th (1.89 inches fell).

    Yellowstone Lake:... average temperature 45.4°F, max for month 75°F (22nd), min for month 27°F (7th), precip total (2.94 inches) of which 0.70 inch fell on the 5th-6th.
