Wyoming Monthly Climatology
August 2005

Statewide Summary

Graphs show that during the month of August, temperatures ranged from 2°F above normal over Sublette County to 4°F below normal over the Eastern Bighorn Basin. Precipitation consisted of a highly complex pattern ranging from 25% to 300% of normal. This was the result of widely scattered thunderstorms across the state. Modeled soil moisture showed no significant worsening of conditions across the Wyoming Rockies since last month. Stream flows were near normal except over portions of east central, north central, northwestern Wyoming. The Drought Monitor map shows conditions varying from no drought to severe drought over Wyoming with slight improvement & worsening since the end of May 2005.

For the summer of 2005, precipitation was above normal over the eastern third, north central, and northwestern corner of Wyoming while below normal precipitation dominated the central and western regions of the state.

As of 28 August, 40 percent of the State had adequate topsoil moisture, 3 points below last week. Topsoil moisture supplies were well ahead of the 5-year average of 13 percent. Irrigation water supplies were adequate in 71 percent of the state, much better than last year's 41 percent and the 5-year average of 29 percent. Range and pasture lands were rated good or excellent in 49 percent of the state, well ahead of last year's 13 percent and the average of 9 percent. Conditions remained the best since 1999.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, August 5th, temperatures ranged from 0.6 degrees below normal in Worland to 4.1 degrees above normal in Chugwater. The high temperature was 98 in Sundance and the low was 37 in Jackson. Temperatures cooled down across most of Wyoming, but they remained mostly above normal. Wheatland reported the most precipitation with 1.10 inches, Afton with 0.91 inches, Big Piney reported 0.84 inches, and 0.66 inches in both Chugwater and Torrington.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, August 12th, temperatures were mostly above normal and ranged from 1.4 degrees below normal in Worland to 3.9 degrees above normal in Evanston. The high temperature was 100 in Redbird and the low was 31 in Jackson. Cool, wet conditions moved across Wyoming late in the week. All stations received some rain. Redbird reported the most precipitation with 1.42 inches, Newcastle with 1.11 inches, Kaycee with 1.05 inches, and 0.95 inch in Casper.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, August 19th, temperatures were mostly below normal ranging from 7.1 degrees below normal in Casper to 0.7 degrees above normal in Evanston. The high temperature was 93 in Deaver and the low was 31 in Jackson. Precipitation was above normal except in the Southeast and South Central. Newcastle reported the most precipitation with 2.65 inches, followed by Afton with 1.22 inches and Jackson with 1.08 inches.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, August 26th, temperatures ranged from 3.1 degrees below normal in Worland to 3.9 degrees above normal in Big Piney. The high temperature was 95 in Greybull and Wheatland and the low was 29 in Jackson. Precipitation was below normal for nearly all of the state. Redbird reported the most precipitation with 0.39 inches, followed by Archer with 0.34 inches and Sundance with 0.20 inches.
