Wyoming Monthly Climatology
April 2005

Statewide Summary

Graphs show that during the month of April, temperatures ranged from above normal over NE Wyoming to within 2 degrees of normal elsewhere. Precipitation was general above normal over the Powder-Tongue, Bighorn, and SW regions of the state. Since the Water Year began on 1 October 2004, the SW region of the state has experience well above normal precipitation with a complex pattern of surplus and deficits elsewhere. Modeled soil moisture showed some improvement over southern and NE Wyoming during the month, with driest conditions persisting over northeastern Wyoming. Mountain snowpack was well below normal over northern Wyoming while elsewhere, conditions were nearer to slightly below normal. At the end of April, average snowpack was 74%, up about 13% from April, 2004. The end of April streamflow was somewhat below normal over nearly the northern half the state.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, April 8, temperatures were above normal. Temperatures ranged from 0.7 degrees above normal in Afton to 11.8 degrees above normal in Redbird. The low temperature for the week was recorded in Afton at 15 degrees, and the high temperature was 78 at Greybull. Precipitation was below normal almost everywhere. The most precipitation fell in Kaycee with 0.85 inches and Deaver with 0.65 inches. Nearly all stations continue to be below normal for the year. A weekend storm brought rain or snow to many areas along with colder temperatures.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, April 15, temperatures were averaged near normal. Temperatures ranged from 2.6 degrees below normal in Afton to 3.6 degrees above normal in Redbird. The low temperature for the week was recorded in Jackson at 14 degrees, and the high temperature was 82 at Newcastle. Precipitation was again below normal almost everywhere. The most precipitation fell in Worland with 0.56 inches, Wheatland with 0.52 inches, and Sundance with 0.50 inches. Nearly all stations continue to be below normal for the year.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, April 22, temperatures were above normal for most of the state. Temperatures ranged from 5.2 degrees below normal in Powell to 5.0 degrees above normal in Newcastle. The low temperature for the week was recorded in Jackson at 15 degrees, and the high temperature was 84 at Redbird and Torrington. Precipitation was above normal almost everywhere. The most precipitation fell in Redbird with 1.77 inches, Powell with 1.40 inches, and Kaycee with 1.16 inches. This week's precipitation brought several stations to near normal for the year.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, April 29, temperatures were below normal for most of the state. Temperatures ranged from 10.2 degrees below normal in Torrington and Wheatland to 1.9 degrees above normal in Afton. The low temperature for the week was recorded in Laramie at 6 degrees, and the high temperature was 70 at Worland. All areas received some precipitation, mostly in the form of snow, but amounts varied widely across the state. The most precipitation fell in Chugwater with 1.06 inches, Rock Springs with 1.00 inches, and Wheatland with 0.97 inches.

Weather Summary: For the final week in April, considerable snowfall fell across the state: Spring Snow Storm. Temperatures were well below normal.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in April was 43.1°F. This is 1.5°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 74°F on the 18th and the minimum of 18°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 1.65 inches is 106% of normal. The wettest day in the was on the 20st (0.58 inch) fell. Snowfall totaled 13.4 inches which is 138% of the long term average.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in April was 38.2°F. This is 1.0°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 69°F on the 17th and the minimum of 6°F occurred on the 29th (record for the day and 2nd latest late season single digit temperature). For nearly four days (28 April through 1 May), the temperature failed to get above freezing! This period also marks the first below above temperature since early January 2005 across Wyoming. Precipitation total of 0.81 inch is 76% of normal. A strong cold front moved through the Laramie Valley and southeast Wyoming on the 8th and the wind plot at Laramie 6.3 NNE shows winds in excessive of 60 mph.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in April was 40.4°F. This is 1.2°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 70°F on the 17th and the minimum for the month was 9°F occurring on the 29th (record for the day). Precipitation total of 0.21 inch is 20% of normal.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in April was 41.0°F. This is 1.3°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 71°F on the 17th and the minimum for the month was 19°F occurring on the 29th. Precipitation total of 1.22 inches is 120% of normal. Snowfall totaled 9.9 inches which is 171% of the long term average.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in April was 39.6°F. This is 0.7°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 66°F on the 17th and the minimum for the month was 18°F occurring on the 1st. Precipitation total of 1.01 inches is 89% of normal.

    Big Piney

    The average temperature in April was 37.8°F. This is 1.4°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 66°F on the 17th and the minimum for the month was 15°F occurring on the 15th. Precipitation total of 0.95 inch is 183% of normal.

    Lander

    The average temperature in April was 44.2°F. This is 0.3°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 73°F on the 7th and 17th and the minimum for the month was 22°F occurring on the 28th. Precipitation total of 1.66 inches is 80% of normal and this represents the 48th driest April on record. Snowfall totaled 23.4 inches which is 116% of the long term average. Since the season began on 1 July 2004, 87.0 inches of snow has fell which represents 91% of the 1971-2000 average.

    Riverton

    The average temperature in April was 44.3°F. This is 0.2°F warmer than normal. Record high of 62°F (2nd), 66°F (3rd), 72°F (7th), 71°F (16th), and 76°F (17th) were set. Record low of 25°F (27th) and 22°F (28th) were also set. The maximum temperature for the month was 68°F on the 9th and the minimum for the month of 12°F occurred on the 15th. Precipitation total of 1.01 inches is 100% of normal. Snowfall totaled 12.5 inches which is 227% of the long term average.

    Worland

    The average temperature in April was 46.5°F. This is 1.3°F cooler than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 81°F on the 17th and the minimum for the month of 19°F occurred on the 1st. Precipitation total of 1.50 inches is 179% of normal.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in April was 40.0°F. This is 0.1°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 81°F on the 17th and the minimum for the month of 20°F occurred on the 1st. Precipitation total of 1.84 inches is 104% of normal.

    Casper

    The average temperature in April was 42.3°F. This is 0.4°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 67°F on the 9th and 11th and the minimum for the month of 9°F occurred on the 13th. Precipitation total of 1.04 inches is 69% of normal. Snowfall totaled 13.5 inches which is 111% of the long term average.

    Douglas

    The average temperature in April was 44.2°F. This is 0.7°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 80°F on the 17th (record for the day) and the minimum for the month of 15°F occurred on the 1st and 29th. Precipitation total of 1.14 inches is 70% of normal.

    Torrington

    The average temperature in April was 47.2°F. This is 1.2°F warmer than normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 84°F on the 17th and the minimum for the month of 16°F occurred on the 1st. Precipitation total of 1.08 inches is 64% of normal.
