November 2004

Statewide Summary

During the month of November, temperatures ranged from near normal over portions of southern Wyoming to greater than 4°F above normal over portions of the northeastern region of the state. Precipitation was general well above normal over the southeastern and southwest portions of the state with well below normal amounts over The Bighorn Basin, south cental, and northwest mountain valleys. Soil Moisture is improving over SW Wyoming but still is dry over the northeastern region of the state. The end of month Drought Monitor map shows the least drought conditions over the extreme SE near the Colorado boarder and over central to northwest Wyoming. Exceptional "D4" drought continues to dominate northeastern Wyoming.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, November 5, temperatures averaged mostly below normal with a few Northern and Eastern areas above normal. Temperatures ranged from 4.2 degrees below normal in Saratoga to 3.1 degrees above normal in Sheridan. The highest temperature was 72 degrees in Sheridan, while the lowest temperature was 2 degrees in Laramie. Scattered precipitation was reported in parts of the State with most areas having below normal amounts. The most precipitation fell in Sundance with 0.69 inch, Newcastle with 0.50 inch, and Gillette with 0.38 inch.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, November 12, temperatures through averaged above normal for the State. Temperatures ranged from 4.8 degrees above normal in Torrington to 11.0 degrees above normal in Cody. The highest temperature was 73 degrees in Sheridan, while the lowest temperature was 12 degrees in Recluse. Very little precipitation was reported except in the Southwest. The most precipitation fell in Evanston with 1.01 inches, Rock Springs with 0.45 inch, and Chugwater with 0.25 inch.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, November 26, temperatures through November 26 were above normal for the State. Daytime temperatures reached the mid 50's to low 70's in many areas of the State. Snow was beginning to accumulate in mountain areas. A weekend storm on November 27-28 brought snow and cold to much of Wyoming. As of November 28, average snow cover depth across the state was 4.20 inches, up from only 1.3 inches last year at this time. Most of the state had below normal precipitation, but the last weekend storm improved moisture conditions.

November 27-28th, 2004 - A strong Pacific storm system dug into the intermountain west on Saturday spreading snow initially across southwest Wyoming, and into central Wyoming by early Saturday evening. Snowfall intensified overnight, especially across north through east facing mountain ranges. Adjacent plains were also impacted...though snowfall totals decreased rapidly away from the higher terrain.

*Cheyenne

The average temperature in November was 34.8°F. This is 1.5°F above normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 67°F on the 6th and the minimum of -3°F occurred on the 29th. Precipitation total of 1.55 inches is 242 percent of normal and this represents the 7th wettest November since 1915 and the wettest November since 1992. Nearly half the month's precipitation fell on the 20th (0.72 inch). Snowfall totaled 24.4 inches which is 344% of the long term average. This represents the 4th greatest November snowfall since 1915. A record 9.7 inches fell on the 28th.

    *Laramie

    The average temperature in November was 29.5°F. This is 1.1°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 62°F on the 7th and the minimum for the month was -12°F occurring on the 29th and 30th. Precipitation total of 0.22 inch is 34 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 5.0 inches which is 74% of the long term average.

    *Rawlins

    The average temperature in November was 30.9°F. This is 0.6°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 60°F on the 7th and the minimum for the month was -9°F occurring on the 29th. Precipitation total of 0.12 inch is 18 percent of normal and this represents the 5th driest November since 1951. Snowfall totaled 8.6 inches which is 112% of the long term average.

    *Rock Springs

    The average temperature in November was 30.9°F. This is 1.9°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 57°F on the 7th and the minimum for the month was 2°F occurring on the 29th. Precipitation total of 0.58 inch is 92 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 3.2 inches which is 57% of the long term average.

    *Evanston

    The average temperature in November was 29.9°F. This is 1.0°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 60°F on the 7th and the minimum for the month was -2°F occurring on the 30th. Precipitation total of 1.08 inches is 146 percent of normal.

    *Big Piney

    The average temperature in November was 25.8°F. This is 2.7°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 55°F on the 7th and the minimum for the month was -22°F occurring on the 29th. Precipitation total of 0.31 inch is 84 percent of normal.

    *Lander

    The average temperature in November was 32.3°F. This is 2.0°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 66°F on the 5th and the minimum for the month was -8°F occurring on the 30th. Precipitation total of 0.40 inch is 40 percent of normal. A record 0.53 inch fell on the 29th. Snowfall totaled 20.1 inches which is 147% of the long term average.

    *Riverton

    The average temperature in November was 31.5°F. This is 3.3°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 65°F on the 5th and 6th and the minimum for the month of -6°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 0.21 inches is 45 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 8.4 inches which is 162% of the long term average.

    *Worland

    The average temperature in November was 33.0°F. This is 1.2°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 67°F on the 5th and the minimum for the month of 1°F occurred on the 29th and 30th. Precipitation total was only a trace during the month and is 0.25 inch below normal. This represents the driest November on record (since 1960).

    *Sheridan

    The average temperature in November was 35.6°F. This is 4.6°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 73°F on the 6th and the minimum for the month of -1°F occurred on the 29th. Precipitation total of 0.21 inch is 26 percent of normal.

    *Casper

    The average temperature in November was 33.0°F. This is 1.0°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 63°F on the 5th, 6th, and 7th and the minimum for the month of -11°F occurred on the 27th (tied for record low for the day). Precipitation total of 0.58 inch is 71 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 15.2 inches which is 146% of the long term average.

    *Douglas
    The average temperature in November was 33.0°F. This is 0.1°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 67°F on the 5th and 6th (record for the day) and the minimum for the month of -12°F occurred on the 29th. Precipitation total of 0.65 inch is 88 percent of normal. On the 28th, 0.32 inch fell.

    *Torrington

    The average temperature in November was 34.7°F. This is 0.7°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 73°F on the 6th (record for the day) and the minimum for the month of -11°F occurred on the 29th and 30th. Precipitation total of 0.52 inch is 91 percent of normal. A total of 0.32 inch fell on the 26th.
