Wyoming Monthly Climatology
May 2004

Statewide Summary

Wyoming, May 2004 on average experienced slightly warmer and significantly drier conditions. Average temperatures ranged from 4 degrees F below normal over portions of northern Wyoming to 4 degrees F above normal over a portions of Laramie County. Precipitation was much below normal across all but the extreme western regions of the state. Soil moisture at the end of May revealed dryness over all but the northwestern region of Wyoming.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, May 7, temperatures were well above normal and set record highs in many areas. Average temperatures ranged from 0.6 degrees below normal in Deaver to 11.6 degrees above normal in Lander. The highest temperature reported was 92 degrees in Redbird, Torrington, Wheatland while the lowest temperature was 17 degrees in Saratoga. Weekly highs ranged from the low 70's to low 90's. Weekly lows ranged mostly from the high teens to low 30's. Precipitation was scarce with all stations receiving below normal amounts. Most stations received a trace or less for the week. The most precipitation fell in Gillette with 0.21 inch, Douglas with 0.13 inch, and Afton with 0.11 inch.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, May 14, temperatures were mostly below normal in the West and North with near or above normal temperatures in the South and East. Average temperatures ranged from 10.6 degrees below normal in Deaver to 4.1 degrees above normal in Jackson. The highest temperature reported was 88 degrees in Torrington while the lowest temperature was 17 degrees in Deaver and Recluse. Weekly highs ranged from the mid 70's to high 80's. Weekly lows ranged mostly from the high teens to low 30's. Precipitation was light with almost all stations receiving below normal amounts. The most precipitation fell in Redbird with 0.84 inch, Wheatland with 0.65 inch, and Newcastle and Saratoga with 0.61 inch.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, May 21, temperatures were mostly below normal in the North with above normal temperatures in the South and West. Average temperatures ranged from 13.1 degrees below normal in Deaver to 6 degrees above normal in Saratoga. The highest temperature reported was 83 degrees in Redbird and Torrington while the lowest temperature was 20 degrees in Deaver. Weekly highs ranged from the high 60's to low 80's. Weekly lows ranged mostly from the high 20's to high 30's. Precipitation was reported at all stations with almost all reporting below normal amounts, and most with less than 0.60 inch. The most precipitation fell in Sundance with 1.02 inch, Chugwater with 0.94 inch, and Recluse with 0.85 inch.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, May 28, temperatures were mostly below normal. Temperatures ranged from 18.6 degrees below normal in Deaver to 0.9 degrees above normal in Archer. The highest temperature was 84 degrees in Torrington and the lowest temperature was 21 degrees in Big Piney. At least a trace of precipitation was reported at all stations but all stations reported below normal amounts except in the West where above normal amounts were reported. Most stations reported less than 0.40 inch for the week. The most precipitation fell in Afton with 2.00 inches, Jackson with 0.76 inch, and Big Piney with 0.54 inch.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in May was 55.7°F. This is 4.2°F above normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 85°F on the 5th and the minimum of 28°F occurred on the 13th. Precipitation total of 1.05 inches is 42 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 3.5 inches and is 113 percent of the long term mean.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in May was 49.4°F. This is 2.4°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 78°F on the 5th and the minimum for the month was 19°F occurring on the 1st. Precipitation total of 0.69 inch is 41 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 4.6 inches and is 135 percent of the long term mean.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in May was 51.5°F. This is 0.5°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 79°F on the 5th and the minimum for the month was 24°F occurring on the 1st. A record low temperature of 30°F was set on the 30th. Precipitation total of 0.53 inch is 36 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 0.7 inch and is 44 percent of the long term average.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in May was 52.0°F. This is 2.7°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 79°F on the 4th and 5th and the minimum for the month was 29°F occurring on the 12th and 13th. Precipitation total of 0.50 inch is 37 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 0.1 inch and is 5 percent of the long term average.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in May was 48.6°F. This is 1.1°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 74°F on the 10th and the minimum for the month was 25°F occurring on the 12th. Precipitation total of 0.69 inch is 47 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 2.2 inches and is 116 percent of the long term average.

    Big Piney

    The average temperature in May was 44.9°F. This is 1.1°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 75°F on the 10th the minimum for the month was 21°F occurring on the 12th. Precipitation total of 0.76 inch is 75 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 0.7 inch and is 54 percent of the long term average.

    Lander

    The average temperature in May was 53.2°F. This is 0.2°F cooler than normal (63rd coolest on record). The maximum temperature for the month was 81°F on the 6th and the minimum for the month was 28°F occurring on the 12th and 13th. Precipitation total of 0.67 inch is 28 percent of normal and represents the 12th driest May since 1892. Snowfall totaled 3.2 and is 48 percent of the long term average.

    Riverton

    The average temperature in May was 54.0°F. This is 0.2°F warmer than normal (42nd warmest on record). The maximum temperature for the month was 82°F on the 5th and 6th and the minimum for the month of 28°F occurred on the 13th. Precipitation total of 0.44 inch is 25 percent of normal and is the 13th driest April since 1907. Snowfall totaled 1.7 inches and is 170 percent of the long term average.

    Worland

    The average temperature in May was 54.9°F. This is 2.4°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 86°F on the 5th and 8th and the minimum for the month of 29°F occurred on the 14th. Precipitation total of 0.31 inch is 21 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 1.0 inches and is 200 percent of the long term average.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in May was 52.9°F. This is 0.4°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 85°F on the 8th and the minimum for the month of 23°F occurred on the 14th. Precipitation total of 0.73 inch is 30 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled just a trace.

    Casper

    The average temperature in May was 53.3°F. This is 1.2°F warmer than normal (32nd warmest on record). The maximum temperature for the month was 84°F on the 5th and the minimum for the month of 22°F occurred on the 14th. Precipitation total of 1.07 inches is 45 percent of normal (tied for 16th driest on record). Snowfall totaled 1.0 inch and is 26 percent of the long term average.

    Torrington

    The average temperature in May was 58.4°F. This is 2.2°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 92°F on the 5th and the minimum for the month of 29°F occurred on the 2nd. Precipitation total of 1.19 inches is 47 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 0.2 inch and is 33 percent of the long term average.
