July 2004

Statewide Summary

Wyoming, July 2004 on average experienced cooler and significantly wetter and drier conditions depending on where you live. Average temperatures ranged from 4 degrees F below normal over portions of Platte and Hot Springs Counties to 2 degrees F above normal over a portions of extreme NE, SW, and NW Wyoming. Precipitation was much below normal over SE and SW Wyoming and much above normal over central portions of the state. Soil moisture at the end of July was normal over all but the extreme NE and NW Wyoming. Late period rains helped to boost Torrington's soil moisture profile down to 8 inches. However, D4 exceptional drought prevailed in portions of Crook, Weston, Niobrara, Sheridan, Johnson, and Uinta Counties (drought monitor).

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, July 2, temperatures averaged mostly below normal for the third week in a row. Temperatures ranged from 6.9 degrees below normal in Archer 1.9 degrees above normal in Jackson. The highest temperature was 90 degrees in Sheridan, while the lowest temperature was 38 degrees in Afton and Recluse. All stations reported a trace or more of precipitation. Most stations in the West and South received above normal amounts and most in the North received below normal amounts for the second week. The most precipitation fell in Archer with 1.83 inches, Jackson with 1.25 inches, and Big Piney with 1.12 inches.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, July 9, temperatures were again mostly below normal. Temperatures ranged from 5.5 degrees below normal in Sundance and Newcastle to 2.0 degrees above normal in Jackson. The highest temperature was 96 degrees in Torrington, while the lowest temperature was 36 degrees in Big Piney. Temperatures warmed considerably over the weekend. Almost all stations reported precipitation but most were below normal except in the Northeast. The most precipitation fell in Newcastle with 0.98 inch, Sundance with 0.72 inch, and Kaycee and Sheridan with 0.70 inch.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, July 16, temperatures were mostly above normal. Temperatures ranged from 0.1 degrees below normal in Worland to 6.1 degrees above normal in Evanston. The highest temperature was 101 degrees in Greybull, while the lowest temperature was 39 degrees in Big Piney. Precipitation was light with most stations reporting below normal amounts except in some eastern areas. The most precipitation fell in Casper with 1.78 inches and Newcastle with 1.00 inch.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, July 23, temperatures were mostly above normal. Temperatures ranged from 2.2 degrees below normal in Wheatland to 4.4 degrees above normal in Jackson and Powell. The highest temperature was 101 degrees in Deaver and Greybull, while the lowest temperature was 43 degrees in Big Piney. Precipitation was mostly above average with nearly all stations reporting above normal amounts except in some central areas. The most precipitation fell in Kaycee with 1.68 inches and Sundance with 1.67 inch. Over an inch fell in the following areas: Recluse, Torrington, Wheatland, and Rawlins.

Weather Summary: For the week ending Friday, July 30, temperatures were mostly below normal. Temperatures ranged from 8.4 degrees below normal in Archer to 1.9 degrees above normal in Jackson. The highest temperature was 92 degrees in Greybull and Redbird, while the lowest temperature was 38 degrees in Big Piney and Laramie. Some precipitation was reported at all stations with most stations reporting below normal amounts except in some southwest and eastern areas. The most precipitation fell in Newcastle with 1.00 inch and Archer with 0.88 inch.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in July was 67.3°F. This is 0.4°F below normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 94°F on the 13th and the minimum of 44°F occurred on the 6th. Precipitation total of 1.74 inches is 77 percent of normal.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in July was 62.1°F. This is 1.1°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 90°F on the 13th (daily record) and the minimum for the month was 37°F occurring on the 6th. Precipitation total of 1.07 inches is 69 percent of normal.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in July was 66.3°F. This is 1.6°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 93°F on the 13th and the minimum for the month was 37°F occurring on the 6th. Precipitation total of 1.48 inches is 164 percent of normal.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in July was 67.9°F. This is 1.1°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 93°F on the 13th and the minimum for the month was 40°F (record for the day) occurring on the 24th. Precipitation total of 0.35 inch is 38 percent of normal.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in July was 65.2°F. This is 2.8°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 87°F on the 12th and 13th and the minimum for the month was 44°F occurring on the 6th. Precipitation total of 0.95 inch is 104 percent of normal.

    Big Piney

    The average temperature in July was 60.7°F. This is 0.2°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 87°F on the 12th and the minimum for the month was 36°F occurring on the 6th. Precipitation total of 0.87 inch is 100 percent of normal.

    Lander

    The average temperature in July was 68.7°F. This is 2.2°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 95°F on the 12th and the minimum for the month was 47°F occurring on the 5th and 6th. Precipitation total of 1.12 inches is 133 percent of normal.

    Riverton

    The average temperature in July was 69.7°F. This is 0.6°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 95°F on the 18th and the minimum for the month of 45°F occurred on the 6th. Precipitation total of 0.75 inch is 103 percent of normal.

    Worland

    The average temperature in July was 70.0°F. This is 4.3°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 99°F on the 18th and the minimum for the month of 45°F (record for the day) occurred on the 9th. Precipitation total of 1.27 inches is 282 percent of normal which represents the 6th wettest July since 1960.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in July was 68.7°F. This is 0.1°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 101°F on the 18th and the minimum for the month of 43°F occurred on the 6th. Precipitation total of 1.72 inches is 155 percent of normal.

    Casper

    The average temperature in July was 68.3°F. This is 1.7°F cooler than normal and represents the 9th cooler July since 1937. The maximum temperature for the month was 96°F on the 12th and 13th and the minimum for the month of 40°F occurred on the 9th (record for the day). Other record low temperatures occurred on the 6th (41°F) and on the 25th (46°F). Precipitation total of 2.59 inch is 201 percent of normal and represents the 5th wettest July since 1937.

    Douglas

    The average temperature in July was 69.0°F. This is 1.3°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 98°F on the 11th and the minimum for the month of 43°F occurred on the 9th. Precipitation total of 1.87 inches is 120 percent of normal.

    Torrington

    The average temperature in July was 71.5°F. This is 0.8°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 100°F on the 11th and the minimum for the month of 47°F occurred on the 6th. Precipitation total of 2.65 inch is 149 percent of normal.
