February 2004

Statewide Summary

Temperatures for the month of February were well below normal over southern Wyoming and above normal over northern Wyoming. Average temperatures ranged from 7 degrees F below normal over portions of Sublette and Sweetwater Counties to 4 degrees F above normal over portions of Johnson County. The coldest weather of the season occurred on the morning of 12 February. Precipitation for the month of February was very wet across a large portion of central Wyoming. The lightest moisture, <2 percent of normal, occurred over several regions around the state. The mountain snow pack recovered during the last few days in February across much of the state. Mountain snowpack is about 89 percent of the long term average. However the extreme NE and SE parts of the state are well below normal.

Soil moisture on 1 March 2004 shows some dryness over SW Wyoming, however with recent snows some moisture has returned in the upper levels at Torrington. The drought over Wyoming has remained essentially unchanged during February with the exception of some worsening over the Lower N. Platte River Basin.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in February was 28.8°F. This is 0.1°F above normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 62°F on the 18th (record for the day) and the minimum of -6°F occurred on the 12th. Precipitation total of 0.44 inch is 98 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 6.8 inches and is 99 percent of the long term mean. Since the start of the snow season, 31.6 inches has fallen which is 4.6 inches below normal.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in February was 21.8°F. This is 1.6°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 55°F on the 18th and 19th (both daily records) and the minimum for the month was -19°F occurring on the 12th. Precipitation total of 0.08 inch is 18 percent of normal and is tied for 5th driest February since 1949. Snowfall totaled 6.4 inches and is 112 percent of the long term mean.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in February was 21.8°F. This is 4.3°F colder than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 49°F on the 18th (record for the day) and the minimum for the month was -21°F occurring on the 12th. Precipitation total of 0.47 inch is 90 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 4.9 inches and is 65 percent of the long term average.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in February was 17.7°F. This is 5.2°F colder than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 41°F on the 18th and the minimum for the month was -12°F occurring on the 12th. Precipitation total of 0.55 inch is 102 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 9.0 inches and is 158 percent of the long term average.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in February was 19.3°F. This is 3.7°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 43°F on the 18th and the minimum for the month was -7°F occurring on the 12th. Precipitation total of 0.50 inch is 77 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 11.3 inches and is 115 percent of the long term average.

    Big Piney

    The average temperature in February was 8.5°F. This is 6.3°F colder than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 32°F on the 14th the minimum for the month was -22°F occurring on the 19th. Precipitation total of 0.88 inch is 244 percent of normal and probably represents the wettest February on record (the climate record is incomplete). Snowfall totaled 13.2 inches (probable record) and is 314 percent of the long term average.

    Lander

    The average temperature in February was 22.9°F. This is 2.7°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 55°F on the 17th (record for the day) and the minimum for the month was -11°F occurring on the 12th. Precipitation total of 1.54 inches is 270 percent of normal and represents the 4th wettest Febrary since 1948. Snowfall totaled 36.0 inches and is 339 percent of the long term average. This amount also represents the 2nd snowiest Febrary since 1948 (Feb 1955 had 43.8 inches).

    Riverton

    The average temperature in February was 22.4°F. This is 0.1°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 49°F on the 18th and the minimum for the month of -12°F occurred on the 12th. Precipitation total of 0.97 inch is 375 percent of normal and represents the wettest February since 1920. Snowfall totaled 22.3 inches and is 544 percent of the long term average. This amount represents the 2nd snowiest February since 1920 (Feb 1987 had 22.5 inches).

    Worland

    The average temperature in February was 22.8°F. This is 3.4°F colder than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 53°F on the 25th (record for the day) and the minimum for the month of -23°F occurred on the 12th. Precipitation total of 1.03 inches is 378 percent of normal and represents the wettest February since 1961. Snowfall totaled 6.5 inches and is 203 percent of the long term average and is tied for 6th snowiest February since 1961.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in February was 29.2°F. This is 2.2°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 54°F on the 25th and the minimum for the month of -9°F occurred on the 12th. Precipitation total of 1.01 inches is 168 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 9.7 inches and is 94 percent of the long term average.

    Casper

    The average temperature in February was 27.0°F. This is 0.3°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 54°F on the 18th (tied for the daily record) and on the 26th and the minimum for the month of -6°F occurred on the 11th and 12th. Precipitation total of 0.64 inch is 100 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 18.9 inches and is 189 percent of the long term average. This amount represents the 5th snowiest February since 1949.

    Torrington

    The average temperature in February was 31.6°F. This is 1.5°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 66°F on the 18th (record for the day) and the minimum for the month of -4°F occurred on the 12th. Precipitation total of 0.285 inch is 67 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 3.2 inches and is 65 percent of the long term average.
