Statewide Summary

Temperatures for the month of June were above normal over western Wyoming and below normal over eastern Wyoming. Average temperatures ranged from 4 degrees below normal at Rawlins to 1 degree above normal in Evanston. Precipitation for the month of June also showed large variation across the state. The heaviest moisture amounts fell in portions of southeastern, central and southwest Wyoming (>150 percent), the least over northwestern Wyoming (<50 percent). Generally, good timing of precipitation and cool temperatures helped to improve drought levels by at least one category during the month with a temporary end to the drought over southern Albany and Laramie counties. However, the hydrological drought is still firmly entrenced over portions of southwest Wyoming during the current water year (starting in Oct 2002). Soil moisture negative departure from long term means are noted over northwest and south central Wyoming with the remainder of the state near normal. At Torrington in eastern Wyoming, soil moisture, especially at depth, has shown afairly steady decline during the month. However, Topsoil moisture supplies improved again with 63 percent of the State having adequate or surplus topsoil moisture as of June 29. This is 6 points higher than last week, an overwhelming 56 points higher than last year at this time, and 22 points above the 5-year average for this date. Could the statewide drought be finally ending? Probably not since the heat of the summer is just beginning.
