Wyoming Monthly Climatology
July 2003

Statewide Summary

Temperatures for the month of July were well above normal over most of Wyoming. Average temperatures ranged from 4 to 7 degrees above normal. Precipitation for the month of July was also much below normal across the state. Any of the heaviest moisture was spotty across Wyoming. Soil moisture continued to worsen under record heat and drought. At Torrington in eastern Wyoming, soil moisture, especially at depth, has shown a fairly steady decline during the month. However, Topsoil moisture supplies improved slightly at the end of the month.



Cheyenne

The average temperature in July was 75.1°F. This is 7.4°F warmer than normal and represents the warmest July on record. The maximum temperature for the month was 98°F on the 8th, 16th, and 17th (all daily records). Other record highs occurred on the 13th at 97°F, tied on 25th at 95°F, record warm minimums of 66 on 17th, 63 on 18th, 67 on 20th, tied 64 on 24th, 67 on 25th. The minimum of 52°F occurred on the 10th. THERE WAS A RECORD 23 DAYS OF 90 DEGREES OR GREATER DURING THE MONTH. THE OLD RECORD WAS 18 DAYS IN 1966. The was also a record number of consecutive days with temperatures reaching at least 90°F at 10 (July 12-21). Precipitation total of 0.44 inch is 19 percent of normal and represents the 2nd driest July on record.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in July was 67.8°F. This is 4.6°F warmer than normal and ties for the warmest July on record. The maximum temperature for the month was 90°F on the 13th, 16th, 17th, and 24th (all new records or tied for record). Other record highs include 89°F on the 18th, and record warm minimums of 60°F on 18th and of 59°F on 25th. The minimum for the month was 41°F that occurred on the 5th and 10th. Precipitation total of 1.11 inches is 71 percent of normal.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in July was 71.5°F. This is 3.6°F warmer than normal and represents the warmest July on record. The maximum temperature for the month was 96°F on the 13th and 23rd (records). Other record temperatures included: Tied record highs of 95°F on the 16th, 93°F on the 21st, and 91°F on the 26th, record highs (broken) 92°F on the 22nd and 95°F on the 24th, with a record warm minimum of 66 on the 17th. Precipitation total of 0.04 inch is 4 percent of normal and represents the 2nd driest July on record (tied).

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in July was 74.1°F. This is 7.3°F warmer than normal and represents the warmest July on record. The maximum temperature for the month was 96°F on the 23th (record). Other record highs include: 94°F (16th-tied), 91°F (17th), 94°F (21st), 93°F (22nd), 94°F (24th), 94°F (31st-tied). The minimum of 52°F occurred on the 5th and 9th. Precipitation total of 0.01 inch is 1 percent of normal and represents the driest July since 1949.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in July was 72.3°F. This is 7.2°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 98°F on the 15th (record). Other record highs include: 92°F (11th-tied), 96°F (16th), 94°F (18th), and 93°F (31st). The minimum of 36°F occurred on the 10th and 11th. Precipitation total of 0.11 inch is 6 percent of normal which represents the 10th (tied) driest July since 1898.

    Lander

    The average temperature in July was 75.9°F. This is 5.0°F warmer than normal and represents the warmest July on record . The maximum temperature for the month was 100°F on the 23rd and 24th (records). Other record highs include: 98°F on the 16th and 17th, and 97°F on the 22nd (tied). The minimum for the month of 52°F occurred on the 4th and 9th. Precipitation total of 0.43 inches is 51 percent of normal. This years total of 6.66 inches is 76 perecent of normal.

    Riverton

    The average temperature in July was 76.3°F. This is 6.0°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 100°F on the16th (record) and 24th (tied). The minimum for the month of 51°F occurred on the 4th. Precipitation total of 0.01 inch is 1 percent of normal and represents the 4th driest July on record. This years total of 5.86 inches is 103 perecent of normal.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in July was 73.6°F. This is 4.8°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 102°F on the 16th and 23rd (record) and the minimum for the month of 47°F occurred on the 4th. Precipitation total of 0.12 inches is 11 percent of normal and repreesents the 5th (tied) driest July on record.

    Casper

    The average temperature in July was 73.3°F. This is 3.3°F warmer than normal and represents the 10th warmest July since 1940. The maximum temperature for the month was 100°F on the 13th (tied), 16th (record), and 24th (tied). Another record high of 99°F occurred on the 17th. The minimum for the month of 45°F occurred on the 8th and 9th. Precipitation total of 0.41 inch is 32 percent of normal.

    Torrington

    The average temperature in July was 77.8°F. This is 4.8°F warmer than normal and represents the warmest July since 1922. The maximum temperature for the month was 105°F on the 17th (record). Other record highs include: 104°F (13th), 16th, and tied on the 24th, and 103°F (25th). The minimum for the month of 52°F occurred on the 6th. Precipitation total of 0.47 inches is 22 percent of normal and represents the 9th driest July since 1922.
