Wyoming Monthly Climatology
August 2003
Statewide Summary
Temperatures for the month of August were well above normal over most of Wyoming. Average temperatures ranged from 6 to 8 degrees above normal over NE Wyoming and 2 to 4 degrees above normal over the NW and South Central portion of the state. Precipitation for the month of August was highly variable across the state. The heaviest moisture occurred across Central WY (>200 percent) with amounts <25 percent of normal over the SE and parts of Northern WY. Soil moisture showed some significant improvements across most of the state by the end of August. However, at Torrington in eastern Wyoming, soil moisture, at all levels, has shown a fairly steady decline during the month. However, topsoil moisture supplies improved slightly at the end of the month.
Cheyenne
The average temperature in August was 70.7°F. This is 4.8°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 95°F on the 6th. The minimum of 48°F occurred on the 30th. Precipitation total of 0.82 inch is 45 percent of normal.

Laramie
The average temperature in August was 64.7°F. This is 3.0°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 89°F on the 6th and 13th. The minimum for the month was 42°F that occurred on the 15th, 19th, and 29th. Precipitation total of 0.78 inch is 57 percent of normal despite thunder being reported on 14 days during the month.
Rawlins
The average temperature in August was 69.1°F. This is 2.6°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 94°F on the 12th and 14th. The minimum for the month was 44°F on the 31st. Precipitation total of 1.11 inches is 137 percent of normal.
Rock Springs
The average temperature in August was 70.5°F. This is 5.3°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 96°F on the 14th. The minimum of 46°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 0.56 inch is 97 percent of normal.
Evanston
The average temperature in August was 67.3°F. This is 5.9°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 91°F on the 10th. The minimum of 43°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 1.49 inches is 159 percent of normal.
Big Piney
The average temperature in August was 63.3°F. This is 5.1°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 93°F on the 14th. The minimum of 37°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 1.05 inches is 131 percent of normal.
Lander
The average temperature in August was 73.5°F. This is 4.1°F warmer than normal and represents the 2nd warmest August on record . The maximum temperature for the month was 98°F on the 14th. Other record highs include: 96°F on the 12th and 13th, and 94°F on the 20th. The minimum for the month of 48°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 0.74 inch is 130 percent of normal. This year's total of 7.40 inches is 80 perecent of normal.

Riverton
The average temperature in August was 73.5°F. This is 5.3°F warmer than normal and represents the warmest August on record. The maximum temperature for the month was 99°F on the14th (record). The minimum for the month of 48°F occurred on the 18th and 30th. Precipitation total of 0.94 inch is 192 percent of normal and represents the 10th wettest August on record. This year's total of 6.80 inches is 110 percent of normal.
Sheridan
The average temperature in August was 74.1°F. This is 5.9°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 102°F on the 16th and the minimum for the month of 45°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 0.57 inch is 71 percent of normal.

Casper
The average temperature in August was 72.4°F. This is 3.8°F warmer than normal (6th warmest August since 1940). The maximum temperature for the month was 99°F on the14th (record) with another record maximum of 98°F on the 13th. The minimum for the month of 46°F occurred on the 31st. Precipitation total of 1.69 inches is 232 percent of normal (5th wettest on record with 1.25 inches falling on the 17th and 18th).

Torrington
The average temperature in August was 74.8°F. This is 4.6°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 99°F on the 9th. For the first 27 days of August, 26 days had maximum temperatures of at least 90°F. The minimum for the month of 52°F occurred on the 19th. Precipitation total of 1.52 inches is 128 percent of normal.
