Statewide Summary

emperatures generally ranged from 1.0°F to 1.8°F above normal in the southwest part of the state and 1.0°F to -2.8°F below normal in the central and northeast part of the state. Precipitation ranged from 15 percent of normal in Rock Springs to 71 percent of normal in Lander.

The average temperature in May 2002 was 49.4°F. This was -0.2°F cooler than the 1895-2002 average, the 53rd coolest May in 108 years. The temperature trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.2 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.

0.98 inches of precipitation fell in May. This was -1.01 inches less than the 1895- 2002 average, the 12th driest such month on record. The precipitation trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is -0.02 inches per decade.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in May was 51.2°F. This is 0.1°F cooler than normal and represents the 69th (tied) warmest May on record (since 1895). The maximum temperature for the month was 88°F on the 30th (tied record for the day) and the minimum of 20°F occurred on the 9th (record for the day). Another record low temperature occurred on the 24th (tied at 31°F) and another record high temperature occurred on the 31st (87°F). Precipitation total of 0.75 inch is 30 percent of normal and is the 10th driest May in 108 years of record keeping. Snowfall totaled 2.5 inches which is 81 percent of the long-term average.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in May was 47.0°F. This is exactly normal for the month. The maximum for the month was 85°F on the 31st (record for the day) and the minimum of 11°F occurred on the 9th (record for the day). Another record high temperature occurred on the 30th (84°F). Precipitation total of 0.82 inch is 49 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 0.2 inch and is 6 percent of the long-term average.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in May was 49.0°F. This is 1.9°F cooler than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 88°F on the 31st (record for the day) and the minimum of 11°F occurred on the 9th (record for the day). Another record high temperature occurred on the 30st (87°F) and a record low of 16°F on the 8th broke the previous record by 8°F. Precipitation total of 0.37 inch is 25 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled of 0.4 inch and is 25 percent of the long-term average and is the 5th driest May on record.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in May was 51.1°F. This is 1.8°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 90°F on the 31st (record for the day) and the minimum of 21°F (record for the day) occurred on the 8th. Another record low temperature occurred on the 9th (22°F) and another record high temperature occurred on the 30st (87°F). Precipitation total of 0.21 inch is 15 percent of normal and is tied for the 5th lowest May total since 1949. Snowfall totaled 0.8 inch and is 38 percent of the long-term average.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in May was 48.5°F. This is 1.0°F warmer than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 83°F on the 31st and the minimum of 13°F occurred on the 8th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.34 inch is 23 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 3.3 inches and is 165 percent of the long-term average.

    Lander

    The average temperature in May was 52.2°F. This is 1.1°F colder than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 89°F on the 30th (record for the day) and the minimum of 21°F (record for the day) occurred on the 9th. Precipitation total of 1.68 inches is 71 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 11.3 inches and is 171 percent of the long-term average.

    Sheridan
