March 2002

Statewide Summary

Temperatures ranged from 3°F below normal in the southwest to 12°F below normal in the northeast part of the state. Precipitation showed a highly complex pattern across the state in March. Snow pack at the end of March was running ahead of last year at this time but only 80 percent of normal except 60 percent of normal in the SE region of the state.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in March was 29.5°F. This is 4.7°F colder than normal and represents the 26th coldest March on record (since 1895). The maximum temperature for the month was 65°F on the 31st and the minimum of -11°F occurred on the 2nd. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.85 inch is 81 percent of normal and is the 46th driest March in 108 years of record keeping. Snowfall totaled 11.4 inches which is 92 percent of the long-term average.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in March was 24.6°F. This is 5.4°F colder than normal. The maximum for the month was 58°F on the 31st and the minimum of -25°F occurred on the 2nd. Record low temperatures occurred on the 2nd (-25°F) and on the 16th (-6°F). Precipitation total of 0.63 inch is 80 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 9.5 inches and is 114 percent of the long-term average.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in March was 24.7°F. This is -9.1°F colder than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 60°F on the 31st and the minimum of -18°F occurred on the 2nd. Record low temperatures occurred on the 1st (-16°F), 2nd (-18°F), and on the 16th (-9°F). Precipitation total of 0.42 inch is 65 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled of 16.2 inches and is 207 percent of the long-term average and represents the 3rd highest March total since 1950.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in March was 28.3°F. This is 3.2°F colder than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 60°F on the 31st and the minimum of -6°F occurred on the 2nd. A record low temperature occurred on the 2nd (-6°F). Precipitation total of 0.86 inch is 110 percent of normal and represents the 16th wettest March since 1949. Snowfall totaled 12.5 inches and is 174 percent of the long-term average and represents the 5th highest total since 1949.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in March was 25.4°F. This is -5.1°F colder than normal and is colder than February 2002. The maximum temperature for the month was 53°F on the 31st and the minimum of -4°F occurred on the 2nd. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.24 inch is 27 percent of normal and represents the 4th driest March since 1899. Snowfall totaled 6.0 inches and is 63 percent of the long-term average.

    Lander

    The average temperature in March was 28.0°F. This is 7.5°F colder than normal. The maximum temperature for the month was 66°F on the 31st and the minimum of -4°F occurred on the 2nd. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.61 inch is 49 percent of normal and represents the 15th driest March since 1949. Snowfall totaled 16.6 inches and is 93 percent of the long-term average.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in March was 22.8°F. This is 12.5°F colder than normal and is colder than February 2002. This was the 2nd coldest March since 1949 (1965 was coldest with average temperature of 19.3°F. The maximum temperature for the month was 62°F on the 12th and the minimum of -14°F occurred on the 1st. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.94 inch is 94 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled 15.5 inches and is 122 percent of the long-term average.

    Casper

    The average temperature in March was 25.8°F. This is 9.3°F colder than normal and is colder than February 2002. The maximum temperature for the month was 65°F on the 31st and the minimum of -8°F occurred on the 2nd and 16th (a daily record low). Precipitation total of 0.64 inch is 71 percent of normal. Snowfall totaled of 14.2 inches and is 108 percent of the long-term average.
