February 2002

Statewide Summary

Temperatures ranged from 3°F above normal in the northeast to 5°F below normal in the northwest part of the state. Precipitation was generally less than 30 percent of normal throughout the state except for over 100 percent in Cheyenne due to a snow event on the last day of the month. Snow pack at the end of February was running ahead of last year at this time but only 75 percent of normal west of the continental divide and Big Horn Mountains and between 57 to 70 percent of normal elsewhere.

The average temperature in February 2002 was 24.4 F. This was 1.9 F warmer than the 1895-2002 average, the 41st warmest February in 108 years. The temperature trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.3 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.

0.82 inches of precipitation fell in February. This was 0.18 inches more than the 1895- 2002 average, the 19th wettest such month on record. The precipitation trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is -0.02 inches per decade.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in February was 29.1°F. This is 0.3°F warmer than average and represents the 61st warmest February on record (since 1895). The maximum temperature for the month was 67°F on the 23rd (a daily record high) and the minimum of -3°F occurred on the 25th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.64 inch is 145 percent of normal and is the 69th wettest February in 108 years of record keeping. Snowfall totaled 10.3 inches which is 147 percent of the long-term average.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in February was 22.2°F. This is 2.0°F colder than average. The maximum for the month was 55°F on the 23rd and the minimum of -5°F occurred on the 25th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.08 inch is 16 percent of normal and represents the 2nd driest February since 1949. Cooperative observers around Laramie reported around 0.20 inch precipitation on average for the month.

    Rawlins

    The average temperature in February was 20.6°F. This is -5.5°F colder than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 48°F on the 23rd and the minimum of -10°F occurred on the 26th (a daily record low). Precipitation total of 0.02 inch is 4 percent of normal and represents the driest February since 1952. Snowfall totaled of 1.7 inches and is 23 percent of the long-term average.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in February was 23.2°F. This is 0.4°F warmer than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 54°F on the 23rd (a daily record high) and the minimum of -4°F occurred on the 26th. Precipitation total of 0.01 inch is 2 percent of normal and represents the driest February since 1949. Snowfall total was 0.4 inch and is 7 percent of the long-term average.

    Evanston

    The average temperature in February was 19.1°F. This is -3.7°F colder than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 45°F on the 23rd and the minimum of -4°F occurred on the 26th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.05 inch is 8 percent of normal and represents the 3rd driest February since 1899. Snowfall totaled 1.0 inches and is 10 percent of the long-term average.

    Lander

    The average temperature in February was 24.7°F. This is 0.9°F colder than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 62°F on the 23rd and the minimum of -6°F occurred on the 26th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.20 inch is 35 percent of normal and represents the 11th driest February since 1949. Snowfall totaled 5.3 inches and is 50 percent of the long-term average.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in February was 29.6°F. This is 2.7°F warmer than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 65°F on the 22nd and the minimum of -8°F occurred on the 26th. A record high temperature of 61°F occurred on the 11th and tied for that day. Precipitation total of 0.23 inch is 40 percent of normal and represents the 7th driest February since 1949. Snowfall totaled 5.2 inches and is 50 percent of the long-term average.

    Casper

    The average temperature in February was 26.7°F. This is exactly normal for the month. The maximum temperature for the month was 57°F on the 23rd and the minimum of -13°F occurred on the 26th (a daily record low). Precipitation total of 0.17 inch is 27 percent of normal and represents the 3rd driest February since 1949. Snowfall totaled of 6.4 inches and is 63 percent of the long-term average.
