October 2001

Statewide Summary

The drought continued over most of the state during October. The amount of precipitation needed to end the drought ranges from 3 to 9 inches throughout most of the state. Temperatures averaged within 2 degrees of normal across the state. Precipitation ranged from 92 percent below normal in central Wyoming to 64 percent above normal in the north central, southeast and southwest parts of the state. On the 23rd, a major cold front moved through the area with winds gusting from 60 to 80 mph east of the continental divide.

The average temperature in October 2001 was 44.4 F. This was 0.9 F warmer than the 1895-2001 average, the 50th warmest October in 107 years. The temperature trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.

1.25 inches of precipitation fell in October. This was 0.23 inches more than the 1895-2001 average, the 32nd wettest such month on record. The precipitation trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is -0.01 inches per decade.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in October was 47.2°F. This is 0.2°F warmer than average and represents the 45th warmest October on record (since 1895). The maximum temperature for the month was 79°F on the 1st and the minimum of 22°F occurred on the 15th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.40 inch is 46 percent below normal and is the 31st driest in 107 years of record keeping. Snowfall totaled 2.6 inches which is 1.5 inches below normal.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in October was 43.9°F. This is 1.9°F warmer than average. The maximum for the month was 75°F on the 1st and the minimum of 9°F occurred on the 15th (the coldest temperature in the lower-48 for that day). A record low temperature of 18°F occurred on the 6th. Precipitation total of 0.41 inch is 50 percent below normal. Snowfall total was 0.4 inch.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in October was 46.0°F. This is 1.7°F warmer than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 77°F on the 1st and the minimum of 14°F occurred on the 25th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.23 inch is 69 percent below normal.

    Lander

    The average temperature in October was 47.0°F. This is 0.2°F warmer than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 82°F on the 1st and the minimum of 18°F occurred on the 25th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of just 0.09 inch is 92 percent below normal and represents the 2nd driest on record (since 1948). Snowfall totaled 0.9 inch.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in October was 61.0°F. This is 1.8°F cooler than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 87°F on the 1st and the minimum of 20°F occurred on the 25th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 1.93 inches is 64 percent above normal. On the 4th, 0.84 inch of rain fell. Snowfall totaled of 3.6 inches.

    Casper

    The average temperature in October was 45.7°F. This is 0.7°F cooler than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 82°F on the 1st and the minimum of 13°F occurred on the 24th. A record low temperature of 15°F occurred on the 26th. Precipitation total of 0.42 inch is 57 percent below normal. Snowfall totaled of 2.2 inches.
