November 2001

Statewide Summary

Despite snow during the latter part of November, the state-wide drought continues. Sample precipitation totals for November indicate above normal amounts over the mountains and below normal over the river basins and plains. Temperatures averaged from 1 to 6 degrees above normal across the state during the month. The first winter Arctic blast of cold air invaded the state on 27-28 November after the first significant snowfall of the season occurred over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The average temperature in November 2001 was 34.8 F. This was 4.6 F warmer than the 1895-2001 average, the 95th warmest December in 107 years. The temperature trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is -0.1 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.

1.03 inches of precipitation fell in November. This was 0.32 inches more than the 1895- 2001 average, the 93rd wettest such month on record. The precipitation trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.01 inches per decade.

Cheyenne

The average temperature in November was 38.9°F. This is 3.7°F warmer than average and represents the 17th warmest November on record (since 1895). The maximum temperature for the month was 70°F on the 5th and the minimum of 0°F occurred on the 28th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.23 inch is 57 percent below normal and is the 23rd driest in 107 years of record keeping. Snowfall totaled 4.3 inches which is 40 percent below the long-term average.

    Laramie

    The average temperature in November was 31.0°F. This is 1.5°F warmer than average. The maximum for the month was 67°F on the 4th and the minimum of -15°F occurred on the 28th (the coldest temperature in the lower-48 for that day and a record minimum for the date). Additionally, despite an above normal monthly temperature, Laramie still recorded the coldest temperatures in the lower-48 on the following days: Nov 9, 5°F, Nov 10, 6°F, and Nov 19, 0°F. Precipitation total of 0.42 inch is 34 percent below normal. Snowfall total was 4.4 inches and is 35 percent below the long-term average.

    Rock Springs

    The average temperature in November was 32.8°F. This is 2.4°F warmer than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 62°F on the 4th and the minimum of 1°F occurred on the 28th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.35 inch is 40 percent below normal. Snowfall total was 1.4 inches and is 75 percent below the long-term average.

    Lander

    The average temperature in November was 35.5°F. This is 4.3°F warmer than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 67°F on the 5th and the minimum of 1°F occurred on the 28th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.45 inch is 44 percent below normal. Snowfall totaled 9.3 inches and is 34 percent below the long-term average.

    Sheridan

    The average temperature in November was 36.5°F. This is 4.0°F warmer than average. The maximum temperature for the month was 73°F on the 5th and the minimum of 0°F occurred on the 28th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.33 inch is 60 percent below normal. Snowfall totaled 4.0 inches and is 53 percent below the long-term average.

    Casper

    The average temperature in November was 38.5°F. This is 5.4°F warmer than average and represents the 7th warmest November since 1948. The maximum temperature for the month was 70°F on the 5th and the minimum of 1°F occurred on the 27th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.76 inch is just 1 percent below normal. Snowfall totaled of 8.7 inches and is 18 percent below the long-term average.

    Gillette

    The average temperature in November was 38.6°F. This is 6.2°F warmer than average and represents the 6th warmest November since 1948. The maximum temperature for the month was 73°F on the 4th and the minimum of 2°F occurred on the 27th and 28th. No record temperatures occurred during the month. Precipitation total of 0.25 inch is 66 percent below normal.
