Snowdrifts Around Wind Shelters
When width is no greater than 15 times height, both semicircular and
wedge-shaped shelters build snowdrifts extending downwind as much as 5 times
the shelter width. As these snowdrift wings build, access to the protection
zone becomes limited to the area directly downwind of the shelter. The
shelter should be located so this access is not blocked by a fence or other
obstruction. There's a lot of water in those drifts, so drainage away from
the shelter is important--might even be enough melt-water for some irrigating.
