Wind Protection
To Shelter Livestock
Shelter Dimensions
Both the semicircle and the wedge (90-degree V-shape) provide wind protection
with minimum snow in the shelter zone, as long as shelter width (across the
wind) is no greater than 15 times the shelter height. In the diagram,
dimension D should be 15 H or less, to divert drifting around the protection
zone. From wind speed measurements, we found the zone with at least 60
percent wind reduction extended about 5 times the height downwind from the
ends of the shelter. The width of the zone is about 85 percent of the shelter
width.
Figuring that each animal (or animal unit) needs about 50 square feet of the
shelter zone, we've plotted the number of animals protected by shelters of
various heights, when width D is 15 times height. The numbers are the same
for either V-shaped or semicircular shelters.
