Wind-blown Snow as a Water Resource
Research History
Research Methods - Pole Mountain, Little Fences
East of Laramie, in the Sherman Range, Pole Mountain was the location for
experiments in the 1960's, to improve water supplies by trapping snow in
draws. The tests used short (4 ft), slat snow fences. (Drifting is from
right to left in the photograph.)
The drifts grew rapidly early in the winter, but seemed to max-out at a depth
about equal to the height of the fence. Lots more water just drifted on by
during the rest of the winter. Ron wondered what a tall fence would do.
